Rugby In Sabah

Rugby Academy In Sabah

The Ministry of Youth and Sports is expected to build an academy for rugby in Sabah and academy for swimming in Sarawak under its sports development programme.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the Youth and Sports Ministries of Sabah and Sarawak had also agreed to include the two projects in their 'rolling plan' under the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP).

He said Sabah was chosen for rugby because the State had been producing a stream of quality rugby players while Sarawak has been known for producing swimmers.

"The site for building the academy in Sabah has been identified near the Likas Sports Complex," he told reporters after joint committee meeting with his ministry and state sports ministries of Sabah and Sarawak, here Tuesday.

Ahmad Shabery said if everything went according to plans, the academy would be ready by 2013.

He added that the Ranau Sports Complex being build by the Sabah state government was also nearing completion and once ready, he would visit the complex to inspect the facilities available.

"We will make sure all facilities and necessities are available before approving the complex as a training base for national athletes.

To become a training base for elite athletes, facilities alone are not sufficient because we need to look at the support services as well, especially medical," he said.
