Vienna Boys' Choir

Charity From Austria

The world-renowned Vienna Boys' Choir is expected to perform again at charity concerts here on Oct 29-30 this year, thanks to the Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu (RCKK).

The choir of trebles and altos based in Vienna is a private, non-profit organisation, comprising 100 choristers between the ages of ten and fourteen mainly from Austria, and many other countries throughout the globe.

Announcing this was Lawrence Thien, the newly elected RCKK President for the term 2011 - 2012, who succeeded Alfred Sii during the club's 60th Installation Dinner here, Saturday.

"We plan to bring one of the world's best known boys' choirs back in Sabah to give some excitement to this city," Thien said, adding that it will be their major fund raising project.

The Vienna Boys' Choir first performed in Sabah back in 2002.

Among other projects carried out by RCKK under the leadership of Thien, is the 'Avoidable Blindness' project, which was carried out in Ranau on July 3.

"About 25 medical personnel from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Sabah Medical Centre and Ranau Hospital performed eye screening on 1,100 people," he said.

Their next project is the 'Teringai Development Initiative', where Kampung Teringai, Kudat will be sponsored as their Rotary Community Corps this Aug 13.

"We aim to uplift the economic well being of the villagers, encourage the development of human potential to its fullest and upgrade their ability to become self dependent," he said.

During the ceremony, spouses of the Rotarians entertained guests with a song titled 'Green Song' which the club plans to adopt for the RCKK district level and to be sung in two important RCKK district events, namely the 21st RCKK District Conference this November and at the International Climate Conference in March next year.

Also present was Haji Abdul Zainie Aucasa, the District Governor of RCKK.
