Sabah youths must be careful with offers of jobs away from home as there have been too many cases of them tricked by unscrupulous agents and employers. Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili, who is also Kota Marudu MP, said some of them discovered that their salary was way below what was promised, while in worst cases they were held against their will and forced to partake in vice activities.

"There have been cases where Sabahans, especially women, had to be rescued after tip-offs from the public that they were held against their will and were going to be taken to another place to work in bars or for vice activities. "Some Sabahans find themselves without jobs and money after paying the agents to send them to other states for jobs. Often they had to be assisted to return home," he said at a job placement programme organised by the Kota Marudu Manpower Office, here, Saturday. As such, Ongkili advised youths and parents to verify the information whenever they consider taking up job offers in other states.

He said 10 per cent of youths who moved to the peninsula to work had bitter experience and he advised Sabah youths not to take up job offers away from home without informing their parents as no one would know their whereabouts if they got into trouble. Ongkili also said a job placement programme was good as an official avenue to help match the youths who were ready to start their working life with the jobs available. Twenty employers participated in the programme with 416 job vacancies available in various sectors.
