All the best and continue read below article....

Increasing demand for Sabah bananas in Peninsular Malaysia has opened up opportunities for farmers in the State. "But there is a shortage as a result of production problems," said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Yahya Hussin. "As such the time is right for the State to explore and fill the demand," he said.

Yahya said the Sabah banana cultivation for export project is a programme that should be given attention and that the effort could assist farmers in the rural areas to increase their income and reduce poverty in the State. He said this in a speech at a contract farming signing ceremony between Sabah banana farmers and Fama, Tuesday.

Yahya, who is also State Agriculture and Food Industries Minister, said normally the market for Sabah bananas is limited in that they are typically only marketed domestically for consumption in the State.

"In the past the issue of competition, supply and demand, supply location, price and cost were the main hurdles faced by Sabah bananas to enter the peninsula market. However starting this year I have been informed by Fama that there is good market demand for Sabah bananas in the peninsula."

Yahya said his Ministry has been continuously asking Fama to discover new markets for Sabah agricultural products. As part of an effort to explore the market demand, two trial shipments of Sabah bananas were undertaken by Fama in 2010 and 2011. "As a result of this previous shipments starting March this year, Fama Sabah received a request to continue shipments of Sabah bananas to Johor and the southern states of Peninsular Malaysia.

"I have been informed that three containers of Sabah bananas, each capable of holding 1,100 to 1,200 bunches of Sabah bananas, were exported in March. "The initial purchase costs for these Sabah bananas amounted to RM22,000 and benefitted as many as 45 farmers from Tenom, Kudat and Kota Marudu. "Currently the demand received from Fama is as much as 144 metric tonnes or close to 10,000 fruit bunches a month with a delivery estimation of 2,500 fruit bunches a week involving a purchase cost of about RM60,000 a month."

"Now is the time to take this opportunity to become the main supplier of Sabah bananas to the peninsula market. This effort needs to be carried out in an integrated manner so that we can convince the market that Sabah bananas are the best and capable of meeting the needs of the customers." Also present was State Fama Director Ribin Wahid, Political Secretaries Mahlan Zinin and Victor Eng and heads of state and federal departments and agencies.
