Miss Earth Sabah finalists visit Kiulu river

Finalists of Miss Earth Sabah 2012 braved the rain during a visit to a river popularly known for its people-friendly fish here.

The 12 finalists visited the Kampung Poturidong Recreational Centre last Sunday as part of a host of activities lined up for them in the run-up to the pageant finale on June 16.

At the centre, the aspirants were briefed about the centre operated by the Poturidong community through a special committee headed by village elder Juara Gidal as well as about the unique "bombon" system.

Also known in other parts of Sabah as tagal, the system is a traditional method used by native communities to protect rivers and fish.

Despite the rain all of them were invited to see the fish for themselves in the Tuaran River that flows along Poturidong and were served with traditional dishes prepared by the villagers.

Kiulu Assemblyman Datuk Louis Rampas, who was also present, explained how the method has been effectively used statewide because of the respect towards native laws.

"There are also 37 villages that has created their bombon in Kiulu," Rampas said, adding each village protects the rivers within their commune.

The finalists of the Miss Earth Sabah were first introduced on June 9 and the crowning of the winner will be held at Sutera Harbour.

In the last several days, the finalists have taken part in a programme to persuade people not to use plastic bags and got to show their talents before a live audience.
