A woman who was hoping to get a bank loan of RM50,000 without any collateral with the help of a man on Thursday claimed she was cheated by him. The trader who only wished to be known as Nur Awang, 30, lodged a police report on March 13 and called on police to carry out investigations immediately.

Nur, from Sandakan, said she had met the man at the lobby of a hotel here on Jan. 1 last year to talk about a business loan scheme. "I was introduced to him by my friend who also invested in the scheme and my first impression of the man was that he looked very sincere as he was wearing a smart attire," she said.

She said the man had offered them an easy way to get business loans ranging from RM10,000 to RM10 million without a guarantor or anything within three months from selected banks. "All he said we had to do was pay the processing fees, depending on how much we wished to loan, and a copy of my IC.

"After discussing and getting convinced by all the documents that he presented me, I paid RM5,000 to him, as I wanted to borrow RM50,000," Nur pointed out, adding that an additional RM800 was paid to the man two weeks later, for other expenses.

However, after waiting for three months and with no answers, she called to ask about it, and his excuse was that she needed to wait a couple more months as there was some problem with the bank, and used the same excuse every time she called until August. "Feeling cheated, I called again to ask for my money back, I decided I did not want to continue waiting so I just asked for my money to be paid back within a week. "He promised but when the time came, he said he was in the village tapping rubber to be sold to pay me my money," she stated. "So after endless waiting and threatening to bring this matter to the police, he then started paying me on an installment basis, but still owes me RM1,800," Nur stated.

In this respect, she said her other friends, who she claimed lost about RM30,000 in total, have not received a single sen back up to this day, because they had dealt with middlemen. "They do not know what to do and are afraid to make a big deal of the issue, so I am here representing them today," she said. Towards this end, she hoped the police can take action and make a thorough investigation on this case as soon as possible, as there might be other victims who are afraid to speak up.

"I know this is a scam because he even said he knew several police reports have been lodged against him for fraud, but no actions could be taken due to lack of proof or reasons such as 'because he had started paying the victims in small sums'," Nur explained.
