Tamparuli and Tuaran, battles of poster in the 1999 general election.

Flashback: 1999 Sabah State Elections in pictures
February 26th, 2008 ( Re-post again inside www.tamparulisabah.com ) Adapted from: bengodomon.com

One of the most interesting Sabah State Elections happened in 1999. PBS was still in the opposition then: they left the BN in 1990 and rejoined on 23rd January 2002. It was the best story of General Election around Tuaran and Kota Kinabalu. The words used really nuts but carrying a prominent meaning for the people. I wish that I can turn back the time and make something precious for my country and people.

The State Assembly was dissolved on 22nd February 1999 after much speculation. Nomination day: 2nd March. Election days: 11th – 12th March.

Here are some pictures that I took then, which, among others brings home the following points:
- personal attacks abound in politics, more so during intense campaigning so close to election day;
- there are no permanent enemies in politics, no matter how grave the accusations are

Pictures were taken in and around Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran and Tamparuli in early March 1999.

The following was written by supporters of Datuk Wilfred Bumburing attacking Datuk Seri Joseph Pairin Kitingan. Of course today they are friends again:

Bumburing was the incumbent, winning the 1994 state elections by 5,087 votes. This time, he lost by more than 2,000 to PBS’ Edward Linggu Bukut. Revenge was complete. Another candidate, Datuk Monggoh Orow, the former Tuaran MP, standing on a Bersekutu ticket, was totally rejected: only 475. A year later Linggu defected to PBRS with 5 other assemblymen. A further 2 years down the road, he’s back in again. Yes, these politicians can really make the rakyat go nuts. And among the six original who defected, it seems that only Johnny Goh and Louis Rampas played their cards right – they’re still assemblymen now (well, at least until February 2008).

The “frog” issue (exodus of PBS assemblymen in 1994) was exploited to the full by PBS, you can see many many pictures of huge frogs with human heads, like the following caricature of Bumburing and Dompok:

Even if frogs were not drawn, the word “Katak” featured prominently:

This was one of Datuk Monggoh Orow’s most prominent billboards in the middle of Tamparuli:

And this one was pro PBS:

That year, Bersekutu was led by Datuk Harris Salleh. The following picture was taken along Tuaran road:

He stood in Likas and got more than 3,500 votes. Not bad for a state seat, but still he got less than the runnerup, Dr Chong Eng Leong (PBS) at 4K+ and the runaway winner, Datuk Yong Teck Lee at 9K+. Later the result was declared null and void, a by-election was held on 21st July 2001, and Datuk Yong got an even bigger majority: 7K+.

Look at this, it was dead serious then, but sounds very awkward in today’s context: Dompok vs Pairin:

The result then: Datuk Clarence Bongkos (PBS) got 10K+, Dompok got 6K+. In 1994, Dompok, while still in PBS won by >3K. In the same constituency was Benedict Sakunil Mansul, at 23 perhaps the youngest ever candidate in the history of Sabah State Elections. Representing Bersekutu, unfortunately he got less than 300 votes, but at least he got more than Datuk Conrad Mojuntin (Independent), ex minister: a mere 59 votes. If you think that’s bad, Pasok president Cleftus Mojingol got 18 votes. Surely it can’t get any worse than that? It can. During the 1990 state elections, Edmund Otigil (Independent), contesting against then chief minister, Datuk Joseph Pairin Kitingan in Tambunan, got a mere 6 votes.

Tamparuli Upside House

I was tremendously fascinated when I read a blog about the so-called Upside House Of Tamparuli Sabah. I really wanted to give him/her Thumb Up for his/her effort for writing the article and promoting Tamparuli Sabah as major tourist attraction as well. For the Travelling lovers out there, come visit Tamparuli during this school holidays and the suggestion day is on Wednesday. All the best, Peace No War and God Bless You All.

Rumah Terbalik @ Tamparuli, Sabah

Seems like Kota Kinabalu is focusing a lot on its tourism lately! We have a Rumah Terbalik (The Upside Down House in Borneo) built at Tamparuli, Sabah! Opened to all visitors. Driving from KK to Tamparuli takes about 40 minutes to less than 1 hour. Depending what kinda speed you are driving of course, and traffic condition.

First thing we saw was this upside down Kancil car just right in front of the parking lot. I have no idea how they hold the weight up there. Tonnes of glue and nails?

And beside was an upside down house. That's where we'll be going inside later...

So we bought ourselves tickets at the counter. The staffs are real polite.

Below is the price for foreigners. Whereas for locals, charges are RM10 for adult. Great way to support our own tourism field.

There was a female guide that led us into the house. We were asked to hit that Gong 3 times and knock on the door before entering the house. Its a culture thing.

Before we entered the house, she told us there were 3 rules which we must abide to it.
(1) We are not allowed to touch the objects inside the house.
(2) We are only allowed to walk on the red carpet that's laid inside the house.
(3) We are NOT ALLOWED TO TAKE PICTURE INSIDE THE HOUSE. What?...

So what's inside there, you can only see it with your own eyes. It's pretty interesting.

Note : The whole tour took less than 10 minutes. As that was the ONLY house to be visited.

Minutes later, we were led to the souvenir shop....................................................

and THATS it. End of tour. True Story.

Ambition Of Life

Hope of The Nation

It seem like ages that I have not steped in my hometown of Tamparuli Sabah. Since January 2011, I have been in Johor Bahru for an Educational Training and it will took me one year to complete this so call KPLI Program. For the past three years, I've been trying to upgrd my life to the fullest but nothing seem to blossom yet. I have try to be involve into Politic but it turn to be dizaster for me and this experience turn me into a betterman. Although I have backup from my family and relative but this not enough for entering this so call political arena. All my life, I swear to serve my family, society and my beloved nation but this ambition is not succesed yet. I have experience in doing business and work with great company but still cannot acomplish what my objective in life. Serving the society is my goal in this life. Hopefully I have choose the right decission when entering this KPLI program.

KPLI program is a program conduct by the KPM(Kementerian Pelajaran Malaysia) and after completing this program I shall become a Teacher. Teacher is termendous from the eye of the public. Teacher is not only comming to school for teaching but as a role model, Vision connector and the most important thing is the transformer of the life of a nation. There will be no proffesion like Doctor, Acountant, Lawyer, Businessman, CEO, Minister and many more without a Teacher. A born Teacher need to develop himself/herself before getting the title of Teacher infornt of his/her name. Teacher should get intensive training for physical and mental improvement so that he/she can shine when doing his or her job.  Teacher contribute a lot to the society and perhaps we can call it the mechanisme to acomplish government goals and objective towards the challenging world. Day by day this profession seem to adhere into my life and I'm glad that I can serve the society by doing this profession. One of the motto that I really like is "Finish What You Have Started" and will complete this program with flying colors.

I have heared a lot of Tamparulian have joined this profession. Many of my 1995 schoolmate already become a great Teacher, even my classmate during my university time also joined this profession. Hopefully they are not aiming for the salary but to serve the society with full heart. We are the Hope for the nation and we must get away from profession sin to contribute well. I'm ready and in a Tip Top condition to conduct my job. For all Tamparulian Teacher, I wish you good luck and carry on your good job.

Bukit Perahu

Bukit PerahuTamparuli Legend and Myth.

Tamparuli Town is full with legend and myth, whereby people in Tamparuli used to tell me about a story of " Bukit Perahu " which mean Hill Of Boat in English Language a few years ago. One story that is still fresh in my memory is the story of a huge rock shape like a boat located somewhere behind the " Bukit Perahu ". If you want to search for it, it will never be found but you will found it accidentally if don't want to look for it. That was the old man told me years ago. Bukit Perahu is located behind the Buddhist Temple and at the brink of road to Kg Bawang, Tamparuli. This road also known as the old Ranau Road and if you follow this road, you will reach Kg Togop Tamparuli and from there you will penetrate to Ranau Road.

Bukit Perahu
Bukit Perahu got it name because of the huge rock shape like a boat located somewhere behind that hill. I have been there several time already but I never seen it. No body have ever found it but there is story about it. It make me so confuse about the story because there is no evidence about the existing of the "huge rock shape like a boat" and no body dare to find it. My friend and I used to find rubber seed behind the Buddhist Temple and because of worry maybe the old man told us about the story to prevent us to coming back again and again to that hills. The hill is full with small tree and grass during that day. Behind the hill is full with rubber tree and you feel freaky when you go there. It will be a huge discovery if someone find it but there is a myth telling that if you find it you will be lost forever.

Bukit Perahu also used by the Roman Catholic adherent to do the Stations Of the Cross every year. The Roman Catholic adherent is from St Philip Roman Catholic Church of Tamparuli. Bukit Perahu is namely by the Roman Catholic follower as St Veronica Hill and a big white cross is planted on top of the hill. It was majestic and wonderful view from the hill top, you can see all the Tamparuli Town area from there. Pick up you camera and go for it. It open for public and make sure that your are really fit to make the climb. Bukit Perahu is also used by the Paraglider to do the Paragliding Extreme sport. Usually they will do this sport if the wind blow from behind Bukit Perahu. Datuk Jahid Jahim have experience in doing this sport several years ago and I was there at the scene to watch it done. All the paragliders is welcome to join this sport. Tamparuli authority is strongly promoting this sport around the globe and this sport is aiming to be done twice a year. It will bring huge impact to Tamparuli town whereby a lot of visitor will come to this town to enjoy this game.

There are many different story about this hill, you can search through the net or wikipedia to get more information about it. It is a legend or myth it up to the reader to decide it. Mr Ben Godomon in his blog ( bengodomon.com ) is also providing good story and picture about this hill. He start blogging about Tamparuli more than 5 years ago and a credit to him for his outstanding word, articles and picture of Tamparuli Sabah. SK Pekan Tamparuli Sabah

Primary School at Tamparuli Sabah.

SK Pekan Tamparuli located about 3km from Tamparuli Town and was the oldest government primary school at Tamparuli Sabah. Founded in the late 1950s and establish by the British Government in providing low level of education for the public of Tamparuli Sabah. SK Pekan Tamparuli is one of the best school in Sabah and ranked as " Gred A " school by the Ministry Of Education. Got more than 500 students and more then 40 teachers. All the student are coming from Kg Tamparuli, Kg Kionsom Baru, Pekan Tamparuli, Telibong, Kg Tambalugu and many more village in side the district of Tamparuli Sabah.

I still remember that I was there from 1985-1990 and the look of this primary school is totally different from those day. There is a huge number of my friends studying there and I still can remember that it was very nice memory while studying there. SK Pekan Tamparuli is near the Town of Tamparuli and it never left behind from the vast development of Tamparuli Sabah. Many of the famous people from Tamparuli such as Zykiel Leong the former Sabah State Football Player, Gilbert Jim Lajim the guitarist of Papier Mache and many more have once study there. During the time when I was studying there, I still remember that we are being trained in very strong discipline and how to become a good citizen by our teacher. My late auntie is a former headmistress there and she also very strict in doing her job in changing us to become so discipline and devoted to our education.

So grateful for this school, which turned me as a discipline and fully motivated person. When we enter primary level of education, we are being trained to set our ambition, goals and our objective in life and this task fall in the hand of a good teacher. A good teacher means, he/she can contributed to the society in term of education and social knowledge. For me is simple, all the teacher who once teached at SK Pekan Tamparuli is really good and they already done their very best in helping the student and the society here. There is so many best memory there and hopefully SK Pekan Tamparuli will remain the best school of Tamparuli Sabah. From my observation there are more than 60 primary school inside Tamparuli and we hope that as the citizen of Tamparuli this school should be in the same rhythm in term of development with SK Pekan Tamparuli Sabah. In changing Tamparuli district to become one of the develop district in Sabah, we must have good education, public transport, facilities and good leaders. Tamparuli have achieve it education goals and every citizen of Tamparuli is educated and full with modern knowledge and idea. The level of education in Tamparuli is becoming better and better and I hope that this will continue forever.

Street Lamp For Safety

Street Lamp For Safety

Street Lamp from Roundabout Kg Berungis to Roundabout at Telekom Tamparuli.

Tamparuli Town is in a vast of development nowadays, many new building and other facility are being developed by the moving forward ambition YB Datuk Jahid Jahim as the key person for the said development. Tamparuli district is covered from roundabout Kg Berungis to Pekan Nabalu, some part in Tenghilan, Topokon and some part area to Kiulu Town. As the citizen of Tamparuli, we know that our YB is really showing his commitment to develop the town and his people. The road is looking better from time to time, rural area of Tamparuli is being developed and monitored directly from the YB itself.

Normally people is edger to get more and really hard to satisfy their need, there will always be a complain, suggestion and so forth coming from them. When I was sitting in coffee shop couple days ago, I heard some of the old folk of Tamparuli was talking about needing a Street Lamp from Roundabout Kg Berungis to the Roundabout near at the Telekom Building at Kg Tamparuli bring me an idea to write this forum to get attention from our beloved YB to consider this matter.

I think that this Street Lamp is really important same with the road and other necessity needed by the people. As a regular driver from Tamparuli to Kota Kinabalu and Kota Kinabalu to Tamparuli everyday I think that this street lamp is important to the driver and the pedistarian who regularly use it. Many cases such as hit and run, accident happen such as the driver hit a bufflo and apperently all of this accident happen at night. If you travel from KK to Tamparuli at night and it raining, huh it so dark and even your car lamp is cannot cover all your eyes sight. Even with the professional driver also can make mistake. The street lamp can make the people in alert situation and ready for unexpected accidents.

If you compared with other town like Tuaran, the street lamp is really important just like what people need like water and electricity. If you travel from roundabout Kg Raganan to Tuaran Town you will find it easly to travel because the Tuaran authority provide this services for the saftey of the people. Tamparuli town is also important if compare with Tuaran Town. Maybe someday Tamparuli will become a big city like Kota Kinabalu so this street lamp is really important for the public using the road.

Hope for these reason will lead something good for the people to be more concerned about their surrounding and be more alerted by any circumtances to be. This is the good for the user.

Commercial Bank At Tamparuli

Commercial Bank At Tamparuli

We need more commercial bank at Tamparuli.

Tamparuli town is in vast of developing right now, here and there development and becoming busier than ever. People from Tamparuli now is in the starting point to become more develop than ever and I hoping that this vast development will continue until Tamparuli will become one of the best town in the world. More people means more business transaction and more business transaction means more money flowing and that means more commercial needed at Tamparuli town.

The main reason why I wrote this article because I wants to attract attention from the public or government agency to look this matter more seriously. If you go to Tamparuli town, you will see that there is only one commercial bank in Tamparuli that is the sole BSN ( Bank Simpanan National ). The Post office is cannot be considered as a commercial bank because there is some business transaction that cannot be done there. Many of Tamparulian have to travel to Kota Kinabalu to find other commercial banks such as CIMB, Bank Rakyaat, Maybank and many more to do their business transaction.

I am a pure citizen of Tamparuli and using banking transaction everyday and luckly I just do it from my Laptop with the help from the service so call online banking. What about the other people who cannot afford to this? huh.. it's really hard for them to travel from town to town just because to find other commercial other than BSN and surely it costly and energy consuming. 13 years ago Sabah Banks and Alliance Bank have their own branch here but this banks stop their services in 1998. When being asking by the public they said that Tamparuli town is a slow moving town in term of business opportunity and transaction. That was 13 years ago.... but now is different, people are starting to develop their very own business and that means there will be more business transaction will be done at Tamparuli town. We need more Commercial Bank at Tamparuli.
